Keep Your Money Safe While Traveling

Traveling is an exciting adventure, but it can also come with potential financial risks. There are steps you can take to keep your debit card, cash, and other finances safe while you're on the go. Plan ahead so you can enjoy your travels with peace of mind.

1. Notify your bank of travel plans
Before you embark on your journey, inform your bank about your travel plans. This helps prevent your card from being flagged for suspicious activity when transactions occur in different locations.

2. Use secure ATMs
When withdrawing cash, use ATMs located in well-lit, secure areas such as bank branches or reputable establishments. Avoid standalone ATMs in less secure locations, as they are more susceptible to tampering.

3. Enable transaction alerts
Set up transaction alerts on your debit card. These alerts notify you of any activity on your account, allowing you to quickly spot and report unauthorized transactions.

4. Carry a backup payment method
Have a backup payment method, such as a credit card or a small amount of cash available. This ensures you have access to funds if your debit card is lost or compromised.

5. Keep your card information private
Be cautious when sharing your debit card information. Avoid using public Wi-Fi networks for online transactions and never share your card details over the phone or email unless you are certain of the recipient's identity.

6. Monitor your account
Regularly check your bank account for any unusual activity. Promptly report any suspicious transactions to your bank to minimize potential losses.

7. Use contactless payments
Where possible, use contactless payments or mobile wallets. These methods reduce the need to physically handle your card, lowering the risk of it being skimmed or stolen.

8. Keep your card in a safe place
When not in use, store your debit card in a secure place, such as a money belt or a hotel safe. Avoid carrying it in easily accessible pockets or bags.

10. Know your bank's contact information
Keep your bank's contact information handy in case you need to report a lost or stolen card. Quick reporting can help prevent unauthorized transactions and limit your liability.

12. Make copies of documents
Photocopy your passport or other ID, the front and back of tickets, and each credit and debit card you plan to carry. Leave copies with someone back home and keep additional copies locked in your hotel room safe.

15. Do your research
Do a Google search for “usual scams in <destination>” and see what it comes up so you know what you might need to be on the lookout for.
